Be ready for the scheduler to call and confirm your installation day and time

You’ll be notified by our team a few days prior to installation, either by phone, text, or email — however you prefer to be contacted. If you miss the call or text, get in touch to be sure you have the most current, accurate information and you can be ready for installation day. If you have any last-minute questions about the process, now’s the time to ask.

Be sure you understand how long it will take to complete your window-replacement project

While the efficiency of our teams means many of our projects are completed in as little as a single day, some jobs take longer. Depending on how many windows you’re having replaced, or other complexities such as construction issues that may need to be addressed, your project may take more than one day to complete. You will get an estimate on how long the job will take, and your team will keep you updated on the status of a multi-day project and let you know if there are any safety or special considerations to be aware of while work is underway.

Have a plan to keep your family and pets comfortable and safe

While our window replacement specialists will minimize disruption, there can still be some noise. In addition, our installers need room to work, and they appreciate as few distractions as possible so they can focus on their craft. It’s wise to plan for kids and pets to be away from the work zone for as long as necessary to get the job done. Please secure pets in an area where they cannot escape or be a distraction to the crew.

Know whether your windows will be replaced from the inside or outside of your home

Your Renewal by Andersen team will have decided on interior or exterior installation prior to ordering your replacement windows. Remember to confirm which way they chose, so you can prepare accordingly. In addition to making room inside (see below), take steps to trim any shrubs that may impede installation and to protect plants below window openings. Important note: Installers will need access to electrical outlets for power inside and/or outside your home — depending on how your windows are being replaced.

Remove alarms or have them removed by your home security company

If you have window alarms, contact your home security company as soon as you know your installation date. Arrange for the company to remove alarms from your old windows and to reinstall them on your replacement windows. Be sure to discuss the alarms with your Renewal by Andersen team, so that installation/reinstallation of any security features is done in a manner that does not affect your fully transferrable limited warranty on your windows.

Remove window treatments like blinds, drapes, and curtains

It often takes longer than expected to remove window treatments, so try to do this the day before your scheduled window installation. Important note: Replacing your windows is often a good opportunity to launder curtains, clean blinds, or take drapes to the dry cleaner.

Remove wall art

As old windows are being removed and replacement windows are put in place, you can prevent unnecessary damage to paintings, photos, and other wall art by simply removing each piece and placing it in a different room until the installation is complete.

Move furniture at least five feet away from windows

Installers will need plenty of room to work. Five feet should be sufficient for most installations, but larger windows may require more working space. Ask ahead of time if you’re not sure, and give yourself plenty of time to move large, heavy pieces of furniture.

Cover furniture with old sheets or drop cloths

To help prevent heating or cooling loss, our installers close off the room that’s being worked on whenever possible. Our expert installers work in teams and minimize outdoor exposure to your home — typically, one window is out, and the new one is in about five minutes. However, it's never a bad idea to throw a sheet or drop cloth over any furniture to provide additional protection from airborne dust and debris generated during installation.

Now the work can begin!

Here's what happens after the installers arrive at your home

  • One person on the Renewal by Andersen installation team will be your point of contact throughout the installation process. Be sure to ask any last-minute questions you have before the work begins.
  • The team of installers will bring everything they need to do the job. You won’t need to have any tools or equipment, but remember that installers will need access to power to do their work.

  • The team will cover the floors in your home below the areas where windows are being removed and replaced.

  • The team will remove each window that’s being replaced and look for any issues that might hamper installation, such as wood rot or water damage. Should they find any problems, they’ll consult with you on next steps and how to address any problems before installation.

  • The team will put each window in place, and then use a variety of installation materials including flashing tape, insulation, wood filler, sealant, shims, and weather-stripping to enable a weathertight fit.

  • The team will use finishing nails for trimming inside and out, and casing on the interior side of the window to match existing decor.

  • The glass in each replacement window is covered with a protective film. Our installers will remove the film after the window is in place, leaving you with a perfectly clean, clear window.

  • When the work is complete, cleaning begins. The installation team will remove any trash, sweep, vacuum the work area to remove dust, and try to leave each room cleaner than when they arrived.

When the installation is complete, the installation team looks at each window with you, shows you how they open and close, makes sure you understand how to remove and replace insect screens for cleaning, and answers any other questions you may have about your replacement windows.
